  • WFFA Pulse Mombasa changes format and goes online to reach all corners of Africa

WFFA Pulse Mombasa changes format and goes online to reach all corners of Africa

The World Freestyle Football Association and their partners Homeboyz have announced today a change in the format of Pulse Mombasa, the official African qualifier for the World Freestyle Football Championship Finals. The competition, which was due to take place in the city of Mombasa, Kenya between July 15 and 16, 2023 will now move to an online basis to accommodate more freestylers across the continent.

The decision to change the format of Pulse Mombasa has been reached after a thorough consultation process with the African community. The online solution, which will allow freestylers to compete from their cities instead of requiring them to travel, will ease the participation of athletes throughout the whole continent.

The renewed Pulse Mombasa will keep using the current registration platform to ensure the change of format is as smooth as possible for the participants. Once they confirm their participation, the athletes will be contacted individually via Whatsapp and asked to send a 30-second qualification video, which the judges will use to rank them and split them into Circles of four freestylers.ย

These Circles will define the order of the battles in the knockout stage, featuring a Top-16 and a Top-8 both in the male category and a Top-8 in the female category. The best 12 freestylers, 8 men and 4 women, will then make it to the live online Finals, which will take place on July 16th – exactly the same weekend the live event was scheduled at.

The updated calendar of the competition will be as follows

    • Signups process: from May 30th to June 13th
    • Qualification video reception process: From June 14th to June 21st
    • Online competition (including circles and knockout stage): from June 27 to July 12
    • Live Finals: July 15th and 16th

The WFFA will reach out to all registered freestylers to let them know about the new structure. The judges of the competition, as well as the detailed calendar and all the relevant details about the event, will be made available on the corresponding Event Page on the official WFFA website, as well as on the social channels of the Association.

Lukรกลก ล koda, Head of Operations at the WFFA, said: โ€œDuring the build-up to Pulse Mombasa, we have been listening to the African community and realised that an adjustment in the format could help lots of athletes participate, particularly those from countries far away from Kenya. We are positive that this change will mean not just an increased participation, but also a higher competitive level plus the opportunity for many African athletes to showcase their amazing skills… and earn their well-deserved spot in the World Final!โ€.

Myke Rabar, CEO of Homeboyz, spoke about the significance of this change, saying, “Homeboyz is excited to collaborate with WFFA in reimagining Pulse Mombasa as an online event. By leveraging the digital landscape, we can engage a wider audience and provide an avenue for Freestyle Football enthusiasts from all over Africa to participate and be recognized for their skills. This format change aligns with our commitment to fostering talent and promoting the growth of freestyle football across the continent.”

The 2023 Freestyle Football global circuit keeps moving forward unstoppably: Pulse Mombasa, the African qualifier for the Finals of the World Freestyle Football Championship, is around the corner!

This new instalment of the Pulse Series has been fully updated, and instead of taking place in a physical spot, it will happen on a fully online basisย to allow as many freestylers as possible from the whole of Africa to participate.

The event will host a 1×1 battles competition open to all freestylers from the African region; to ensure that their country is eligible for this competition, freestylers can check the official Regional Division of the WFFA.

The signups process will open on April 6th and close on June 13th; there will be no extensions, so all athletes who havenโ€™t signed up by the end of the registration period will not be allowed to compete. Athletes under the age of 18 will be allowed to participate, but they will need to send a signed Parental Form to pulse-series@thewffa.org once registered.

All results from the competition will be published on the official Tournify page of the event. The best two freestylers (one male and one female) will earn themselves a trip to Nairobi, Kenya to participate in the World Freestyle Football Championship Finals: for more details, check the sections below!

    Registration

Signing up for Pulse Mombasa has a cost of 5โ‚ฌ. The registration process will be open between April 6th and June 13th. Important: no new signups will be accepted after June 13th, so make sure to register on time!

To sign up, follow this process:

    1. Go to the official Registration Page of the event and follow the signups process: if you’re under the age of 18, please remember to upload the corresponding Parental Form
    2. When your participation is approved, you will receive a Whatsapp message and you will be able to send the qualification video
    3. The team of judges willย select the best videos and rank them to progress to the next stage of the competition

    Competition structure

The updated Pulse Mombasaย will happen completely online via Whatsapp following this timeline:

    1. Registration process: open between April 6th and June 13th. No registrations will be accepted after June 13th
    2. Qualification stage: open between June 14th and June 21st.ย Freestylers will be asked to send their qualification videos between those dates. No videos will be accepted after June 21st
    3. Circles: happening via Whatsapp between June 27th and July 3rd
    4. Knockdown Stage: happening via Whatsapp between July 5th and July 12th
    5. Grand Finals: happening in a live online show on the WFFA channels between July 15th and July 16th; participants will get all necessary information beforehand so they can prepare accordingly

    Format

In theย qualification stage, the clips of the participants will be evaluated by three different judges, who will give them scores on a scale from 1 to 10. The marks from the three judges will be added up, and the participants will then be ranked according to their total score. In case of a score draw between two freestylers, a judge selected by the Sports Committee will intervene and use his quality vote to break the tie.

The circles will then be created according to the aforementioned ranking from the qualification stage and following the usual seeding procedure: the freestyler ranked first will be placed in a group with the last, the second with the second last, and so on.

In theย circles, three judges will evaluate and score each of the three videos sent by the participants on a scale of 1 to 10. The best-ranked freestylers across all the circles will progress onto the next stage; the general ranking coming from these circles (that is, the total amount of points earned by each freestyler, accumulating the points earned by each of their three videos) will be used to determine the battles in the knockout stage. In case of a score draw between two freestylers, the results of the qualification stage will be used to break the tie.

All results from the competition will be published on the official Tournify page of the event.

    Rules

Pulse Mombasa will use the Official Rules of Freestyle Football for its online battles. Any specific rules and regulations affecting the competition will be published on the corresponding page of the WFFA website.

    Judges

Pulse Mombasa will be evaluated by an elite team of judges, including the following:

Each of the judges will review and evaluate every clip from the participants individually and independently. In the event of a draw during a battle or in the qualification stage, the members of the WFFA Sports Committee will jump in and break the tie.
