Burkina Faso, Cambodia and Jamaica join the Global Network

The most precious structure of the World Freestyle Football Association, the Global Network, keeps growing: three more countries —Burkina Faso, in Africa; Cambodia, in Asia; and Jamaica, in the Americas— have officially joined the list of communities that help the WFFA shape and evolve the sport of Freestyle Football around the world.

Three renowned freestylers and respected figures in their local communities (Abdoul Zizi Kayorgo in Burkina Faso, Long Kim Heng in Cambodia and Adrian Thompson in Jamaica) will become the new Country Leaders of these three countries, the latest to join an organisation that spans over 100 nations in all inhabited continents.

Pekko ‘PeGe’ Piirto, Head of the Global Network, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome yet three more nations to our Network. Each new country brings new ideas to explore and new challenges to tackle: we have no doubt that the three new Country Leaders will do an awesome job and help not just their local communities, but also the sport at a global level.”

Steve Elias, President of the WFFA, added: “The Global Network is surely the most important tool we have to help Freestyle Football communities develop all around the world. It’s really exciting and rewarding to see it growing so quickly across all continents!”.

The task to build the Global Network doesn’t end here: new additions are currently in the making, with individuals in several countries having presented their credentials to join the organisation. The Freestyle Football community can expect more exciting updates very soon!

  • The WFFA announces an innovative, community-owned global governance system for Freestyle Football

The WFFA announces an innovative, community-owned global governance system for Freestyle Football

The World Freestyle Football Association has announced today the implementation of an innovative governance solution to distribute power and upside with the people that matter in the sport – the Freestyle Football community

For this purpose, the Association has partnered with German company OwnCo, whose solution enables organisations to share ownership using their own branded credit. These credits can be earned by the community and are backed with ownership in the organisation itself. Credits can be earned and redeemed into influence, status, ownership or revenue.

In the case of the WFFA, these credits will be distributed to all stakeholders of the sport, from the most seasoned athletes to the freshest up-and-coming talents. The new governance system will be rolled out to the entire community, not just the Association leadership, with the goal of empowering everyone.

With this revolutionary approach, the WFFA progresses toward its goal of becoming the most innovative and transparent sports federation in the world – and, most importantly, materialises its vision of making Freestyle Football the first community-governed sport in history.

Dan Wood, Co-Founder and Head of Partnerships at the WFFA, said: “Without the athletes, there is no Freestyle Football. I firmly believe the same can be said about every sport, but we have the opportunity at this nascent phase of our Sport to write some new chapters on how Sport can govern and grow in partnership with the community. OwnCo shares our values entirely and we are so privileged to have their support in bringing this story to life.”

Pekko ‘PeGe’ Piirto, Head of the Global Network at the WFFA, said: “For more than a decade, at the WFFA we have been working hard to build a strong community of individuals, across the globe, with a single goal: to help Freestyle Football grow and develop. With the implementation of the decentralised governance system, we take a huge leap forward in that direction, ensuring that everyone can be seen and heard. I think this is a major milestone in the development of our sport and can’t wait to see the results in the near future!”

Špela Prijon, Co-founder at OwnCo, said: “At Ownco, we’re witnessing a new wave of companies that understand sharing value and power benefits not only the community but also the company. We’re excited to be working with the team at the WFFA, who are pioneering more equitable governance in sport. We believe that the WFFA is unlocking a future in which builders and contributors are not only seen as equal and valuable – but also given equal and valuable power.”

  • The WFFA announces a global programme to protect the credibility of Freestyle Football competitions

The WFFA announces a global programme to protect the credibility of Freestyle Football competitions

The World Freestyle Football Association has announced the implementation of a global programme designed to protect the credibility and integrity of Freestyle Football tournaments around the globe. The first step in this plan has been the publication of the full List of Champions in official 1×1 battle competitions since the year 2007, an action aimed at safeguarding the reputation of actual winners and preventing fake championship claims from other participants.

The WFFA has announced that it will not recognise any other champions than those featured in the official list, available on the website of the Association. Any fake claims by other athletes will not be backed by the WFFA: furthermore, these claims will be considered a misappropriation, an idea that goes against the very foundations and values of the sport of Freestyle Football.

In the coming months, the WFFA will keep expanding the official list of champions to include all Regional and National competitions, with the objective of offering a complete and reliable source of truth not just to the Freestyle Football community but also to its current and future partners.

Steve Elias, President of the WFFA, said: “Since the establishment of our Association, we’ve striven to protect our athletes and ensure they get the recognition they deserve for their dedication. We are convinced that the publication of the list of Champions is a key step to prevent a tortious use of our tournaments, and we are ready to enact any necessary measures to reinforce the credibility of Freestyle Football as a competitive sport around the world”.

Lucaso Škoda, Head of Operations at the WFFA, said: “The list of Champions is an ambitious project, aimed not only at protecting the winners of official competitions but also at compiling a comprehensive guide to all tournaments in the history of Freestyle Football. In the coming months, we will work together with the global community to polish and expand this directory, a vital tool to prevent misappropriations and pay tribute to the rightful champions.”

Pekko ‘PeGe’ Piirto, Head of the Global Network at the WFFA, said: “We are tremendously proud to offer the list of Champions as an educational resource for our community and a recognition to our hard-earned champions. It’s doubtlessly an essential milestone in the development of the sport of Freestyle Football.”

  • Sri Lanka joins the WFFA Global Network

Sri Lanka joins the WFFA Global Network

The World Freestyle Football Association family keeps growing around the world: this November, Sri Lanka was confirmed as the newest member of the Global Network, an international structure that now includes up to 115 countries from all inhabited continents.

The new incorporation of Sri Lanka is a product of the agreement between the WFFA and Colombo FC, the country’s most successful football club in the last decade. The deal will see local Freestyle Football star Niran Kanishka become the WFFA Country Leader, servicing the Sri Lankan community and ensuring the development of the sport across the nation with the constant support of the WFFA Global Team.

Steve Elias, President of the WFFA, said: “It’s an honour for us to expand into a country with a vibrant Freestyle Football community such as Sri Lanka. We are thrilled to announce this new deal, particularly given the huge prestige of Colombo FC, and we are certain that it will have a strong impact not just in the local scene but also in all the region.”

Niran Kanishka, the newly appointed WFFA Country Leader in Sri Lanka, said: “Being a footballer myself for Colombo FC, playing football with flair has been my routine since I started. There are many talents in Sri Lanka like myself who love expressing our creativity with the ball: our main goal is to create a platform for all the hidden gems in our country. This will be a great opportunity for Sri Lankan freestylers to shine!

Pekko ‘PeGe’ Piirto, Head of the Global Network at the WFFA and a leading figure in the establishment of the deal, said: “Seeing the constant growth of the Global Network in recent years fills me with pride and hope for the future. I have absolutely no doubt that Niran will do an amazing job at nurturing the local scene; we look forward to discovering all the talent that Sri Lanka can offer the world!”.

    About Colombo FC

Colombo Football Club was founded in 2008 during the tail-end of war in Sri Lanka to unite the country through the game of football. In a short span of 13 years, Colombo FC has managed not only to unify the diverse communities in the country but also emerged as the champion outfit of Sri Lankan Football.

The Club has successfully managed to win a hat-trick of Major League titles (2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18), Sri Lankan FA Cup (2015) and represented the country internationally in the AFC Cup (2017, 2019) on two occasions. Their recent triumph in the Vantage FFSL Presidents Cup 2020 was a testimony to their success and the steps they have taken to change the landscape of football in Sri Lanka.
